As we approach 2025, many of us are starting to think about our goals for the coming year. But have you ever noticed how easily we can get stuck when someone asks us why we want to achieve something? Too often, we find ourselves shrugging and saying, "I don't know." It's time to change that narrative and dig deeper into our motivations. Let's explore how asking "so that" instead of "why" can revolutionize your goal-setting process.

If you're more of a video person, here's my Facebook Live if you enjoy random conversations!

The Problem with asking yourself “Why" 5 times….

"Why" is a powerful question, but it can sometimes feel overwhelming when there are so many levels in our reasoning. When asked why we want to achieve something, we might feel defensive because our brain is freaking out and it becomes easier to toss out the “I Don’t Know.”. This can lead to surface-level answers or, worse, giving up on our goals altogether.

Here’s a little brain hack that is working for me, maybe it will wok for you if you find yourself blocking yourself…..try asking the "So That.”

By shifting our language from "why" to "so that," we open up to a specific thing. This simple change helps us focus on the outcomes and benefits of our goals, rather than just the reasons behind them. It encourages us to think more deeply about what we truly want to achieve.

Here are some examples:

1. Instead of asking, "Why do I want to lose weight?" try:
"I want to lose weight so that I can have more energy to play with my kids."

2. Rather than, "Why do I want a promotion?" consider:
"I want a promotion so that I can take on more challenging projects and grow my skills."

3. Instead of, "Why do I want to learn a new language?" think:
"I want to learn a new language so that I can connect with people from different cultures and broaden my impact.”

More examples:
"I want to start a blog so that I can share my ideas with others, so that I can help change more lives.”
“I want to build a community of like-minded individuals, so that we can share one another’s burdens and lift the loneliness epidemic while also sharpening each others’s hearts and minds.”
“I want to be a better leader personally, so that I can make a positive impact on people's lives closest to me and as The oLd leads, so that I am walking confidently in my strengths nd purpose.”

As you start planning your 2025 goals, try this exercise:

1. Write down a goal you want to achieve.
2. Ask yourself, "I want to achieve this so that..."
3. Then, take this to the Lord and ask Him when I do this, how does this help me serve YOU better? How does this prepare me for the “so that” which You have planned for me, with You.

By reframing our goals with "so that," we cut through the surface-level reasons and get to the heart of what truly drives us. This approach not only clarifies our objectives but also reinforces our commitment to achieving them.

As you look ahead to 2025, challenge yourself to go beyond the "why" and embrace the "so that." You might be surprised at the insights you gain and the renewed sense of purpose you feel. Remember, understanding the deeper reasons behind your goals is the first step to turning them into reality.

So, what do you want to achieve in 2025, and more importantly, what does GOD have planned fo you, so that…?!?

Blessings & Grace,
Michele
